regan gentry: near nowhere, near impossible
June 7 - August 31
Sculptor Regan Gentry has been artist-in-residence at Tylee Cottage from December, 2007 - May 2008. The exhibition Near Nowhere, near Impossible features work that artistically explores the failed settlement of the Mangapurua Valley - the site of the famous ‘Bridge to Nowhere'. The exhibition will include a replica bridge made from rope, an impressive hedge of giant thistles, a man made out of corned beef and a giant chimney made from local pumice. The exhibition is a great chance for students to learn about local history and to experience first hand some exciting sculpture. Regan's residency has received the generous support of Creative New Zealand funding.

June 28 - August 24
Samoa Contemporary celebrates the best of Samoan art in New Zealand today.
Featuring the work of 17 artists, only three are Samoan-born and they all live in New Zealand cities, so their urban reality is far removed from their roots in Samoa . The artists are using a new urban-based visual language that draws on their Samoan heritage and communal experience of Samoan culture in New Zealand , as well as their wider New Zealand experience. The works in the exhibition share a number of broad themes - in particular the realities of migration, adaptation, identity and displacement. The exhibition includes painting, photography, drawing, sculpture and multimedia works. The exhibition has been curated and toured by Pataka in Porirua.
