The 2014 Bryce Smith & Associates Ltd Whanganui Arts Review is being held this year for the first time, at Sarjeant on the Quay; the temporary location of the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui. The Arts Review is an annual event and one of the longest running exhibitions of its type and is a valued component of the Sarjeant’s exhibition programme. The selected exhibition is open to all artists working in any media in the Whanganui region and is a true reflection of this area’s creative energy.
The Sarjeant would also like to take the opportunity to thank principal sponsor Bryce Smith & Associates Ltd, for committing to sponsorship of the event for three years, this generous support includes the Open Award of $2000 and three Highly Commended Awards valued at $500 each.

This year’s exhibition was selected by Greg Donson, Curator & Public Programmes Manager at the Sarjeant; former Tylee Cottage Artist-in-Residence Johanna Pegler and Sarah Williams, owner of the local gallery SPACE. The judge for the 2014 Review was Helen Kedgley, Director of Pataka Art + Museum and the prizes were awarded to the following recipients. 2014 Bryce Smith and Associated Ltd Open Award to Penni Wyse, 2014 Bryce Smith and Associated Ltd Highly Commended Awards to Paul Rayner, Sonny Barlow and Prakash Patel.

Merit awards were received by Mark Strachan and Justine Law, Emma Cunningham, Wendy Caldwell, Glen Hutchins, Rita Dibert, Sweaney Jacks, and Deborah Halliday. These awards were generously sponsored by Central City Pharmacy, Members of the Sarjeant Gallery, Rivercity Picture Framers Ltd., Recaffeinate, Renata’s Art & Framing, Ceramic Lounge, and The Flying Fox.

The Sarjeant staff would like to congratulate the award winning artists. We are thrilled to be able to host this event in their new surrounds and wish to thank all of the artists who have taken part in this year’s event. Strong proof once again that Whanganui is indeed a centre of arts and culture.
